Video export settings explained: format, resolution, bitrate

By Courses4Anyone · Published

Export settings decide how your finished video looks after upload and how large the file is. A few defaults cover most situations, and knowing what each setting does helps you fix problems such as blurry uploads or files that are too large to send.

The export settings that matter most

What is the difference between a container and a codec?

A container such as MP4 or MOV is the file wrapper that holds video, audio and metadata. A codec such as H.264 or H.265 is the method used to compress the video inside it. For maximum compatibility on the web and social platforms, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest choice.

Which resolution and frame rate should you use?

Export at the resolution and frame rate you shot and edited in unless the destination requires otherwise. Common targets are 1920x1080 for standard HD, 3840x2160 for 4K and 1080x1920 for vertical Reels, Shorts and TikToks.

Keep the frame rate consistent with the footage, such as 24, 25, 30 or 60 frames per second, instead of converting it, which can cause stutter.

How does bitrate affect quality and size?

Bitrate is the amount of data used per second of video. Higher bitrate preserves more detail and creates larger files. Platforms re-compress uploads, so exporting a clean, reasonably high-quality file gives them better source material than a heavily compressed one.

Fast motion, grain and fine detail need more bitrate than a static talking-head shot. If a finished video looks blocky in busy scenes, the bitrate is the first thing to raise, and many editors offer a variable bitrate option that spends more data where the picture is complex.

What should you check before uploading?

Run through a short checklist after each export:

  • — Watch the whole file once, including the audio.
  • — Confirm the aspect ratio and safe margins for the platform.
  • — Check that captions and titles are readable on a phone.
  • — Keep a high-quality master export for archiving.
